Honey-Grilled Figs with Lemon Mascarpone

Grilling figs concentrates their flavor. Dipping in honey before grilling helps the surface caramelize quickly enough for the figs not to overcook. Caramelizing  adds a delicious flavor component that marries perfectly with Lemon Mascarpone. Don’t forget a sprinkle of finishing salt and freshly ground black pepper; they add a surprising, but wonderful, final touch.

  • 6 figs
  • 2 Tbsp. honey
  • 1/2 cup mascarpone
  • 2 tsp. finely grated Meyer lemon peel
  • Fleur de sel or other finishing salt
  • Freshly ground black peppee
  • Slivers of mint or Meyer lemon peel, for garnish

Start grill and heat until very hot. If cooking inside, put cast iron grill pan over high heat  until very hot.

Cut figs in half, remove stems, and dip cut side of fig halves in honey. Whip mascarpone with grated lemon peel until it’s light and fluffy. Set aside until figs are finished.

Grill figs on indirect heat or in grill pan, cut side down, until figs just begin to char. Turn figs over and again cook until figs just begin to char. Remove to serving plate.

When ready to serve, top grilled figs with spoonfuls of Lemon Mascarpone and a sliver of mint or Meyer lemon peel. Sprinkle with finishing salt and freshly ground black pepper. Serve warm or at room temperature.
